A Guide to Scholarships in Denmark for International Students

Higher Education in Denmark is free for EU/EEA students while Non-EU students have to pay tuition fee of around 6,000 to 16,000 Euro.  To attract excellent non-EU students, the Danish Government and Institutions provide a number of scholarships for international students for study in Denmark.

Danish Government Scholarships for Highly Qualified Non-EU/EEA students
Danish higher education institutions receive a limited number of government scholarships each year to fund highly qualified full-degree students from non-EU/EEA countries and Switzerland.  The scholarships are administered by the Danish institutions of higher education, each of which decides which students will receive a scholarship.  The government scholarship consists of two parts and can be given as full or partial tuition fee waivers and/or grants towards covering your living costs but this varies depending on the Danish Institution.

Examples of Danish Government Scholarships offered by Danish Institutions are as follows:

Danish State Tuition Fee Waivers and Scholarships at Roskilde University
A limited number of Danish state tuition fee waivers and scholarships are offered to highly talented students at graduate level, who come from countries outside of the EU/EEA and need a residence permit to study at Roskilde University.  Four (4) Tuition fee waivers with a monthly scholarship worth DKK 7,800 per month will be offered to academically highly qualified applicants for specific programmes while ten (10) Tuition Fee Waivers will be offered to academically highly qualified applicants for the remaining master programmes as specified in the list of programmes.

IT University of Copenhagen State Scholarships
The IT University of Copenhagen offers state scholarships to three or four exceptionally talented MSc applicants (full-degree students) from outside EU and EEA every year.  The scholarships include free tuition and partly covering of living expenses.

Danish Government Scholarships at University College of Denmark
Each year University College of Northern Denmark has a few scholarship places for non-EU citizens who are enrolled on a study programme at UCN. UCN’s scholarship programme covers 75 per cent of the tuition fees which means that the remaining 25 per cent must be paid by the student.  The people who are awarded a scholarship from UCN may under certain circumstances also receive an additional small sum each month to cover parts of their living expenses.

The Danish Government Scholarships under the Cultural Agreements

Edinburgh Global Masters Scholarships (UK)
The University of Edinburgh offers around 40 Master’s scholarships for postgraduate Master’s programme in any subject offered by the University.  The scholarships will be awarded to students who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis.  Fifteen (15) scholarships will have a value of £5,000 each while a further twenty-five (25) scholarships will have a value of £3,000 which will be tenable for one academic year.

Sheffield Hallam University Transform Together Scholarships for Non-EU Students (UK)
Transform Together scholarships are open to students from any non-EU country applying to study full time postgraduate or undergraduate programme at Sheffield Hallam University.  The scholarships are specially targeted to international students who want to represent the international student body at Sheffield Hallam University.  The scholarships include a one-year full tuition fee waiver for full-time taught postgraduate courses and 50% tuition fee discount for each year of an undergraduate course (subject to successful progression).

Leiden University Excellence Scholarships (Netherlands)

A Guide to Norway Scholarships for International Students

Norway is becoming a popular study destination among international students. An increasing number of Norwegian universities and university colleges are offering Bachelor’s and Masters programmes in English.  It is one of the few remaining countries in the world where tuition fee is free for everyone including international students.  The Norwegian Government also offers scholarship programs to cover living costs in Norway.

Tuition Free Universities in Norway

Studyinnorway.no says: Norwegian state universities and state university colleges as a rule do not charge tuition fees for international students. However, students will need to pay a semester fee of NOK 300-600 ($50-100) each semester. This is applicable for all levels, including undergraduate studies, Masters programmes and Ph.D. programmes. Note that some state universities and university colleges may have tuition fees for a few specialized programmes. Typically these programmes are at the Masters level.

Most private institutions charge tuition fees for all their programmes and courses. But the fees are usually significantly lower than those of comparable studies in most other countries. Also, foreign students don’t pay higher tuition fees than Norwegian students.

Norwegian Government/EU Scholarships for International Students

Norwegian Quota Scheme
The Quota Scheme awards scholarships for students from developing countries and countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia through the Quota Scheme. The objective of the scheme is to promote the internationalisation of higher education. The scheme normally includes courses taught in English at Masters and Ph.D. level, in addition to certain professional degrees.  Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. About 30 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 70 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion is waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Programs in Norway
Norwegian Universities participate in quite a number of study programs which are funded by Erasmus Mundus Scholarships.  The scholarships allow international students to pursue a participating Erasmus Mundus study program for free.   Find the complete list of Erasmus Mundus Master Courses and PhD Courses and from these lists you will find Erasmus Mundus funded courses that are conducted in Norway.

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship program has ended in 2012-13. Beginning in 2013-14, The Foundation will offer scholarship funding through the Rotary Foundation Global Grants.   The Global Grants provide scholarships to fund graduate-level coursework or research or its equivalent for a term of one to four academic years.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The minimum award amount from the World Fund for a global grant, regardless of activity type, is US$15,000, which results in a minimum total financing of $30,000.

Eligibility Guidelines:

Activities under Global grants should align with one or more of Rotary’s areas of focus, must be sustainable and measurable (i.e. ‎How will a scholar’s studies support one or more of the areas of focus?), and should stem from real community needs. Global grants must  be sponsored by at least one Rotary club or district in the country or geographical area where the grant project will take place (primary host sponsor) and one or more outside that country or geographical area(primary international sponsor).

Scholarship applicants must provide proof of university admission to a graduate-level program or letter of invitation to conduct postgraduate-level research when applying for the grant. Admission that requires a guarantee of financial support is acceptable.

You can contact the Rotary clubs in your respective countries (see contact details below) to inquire on how to be sponsored for the grant.  Scholars must submit individual applications to supplement the overall grant application.   Applications are generally accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year but some Rotary Clubs might have specific timeline.

To apply, you must submit the web application form by 29 May 2014.  You no longer need to have secured an offer to study at Bradford before you apply for this scholarship.  If you cannot come to Bradford without the full scholarship to cover your fees and living expenses then please apply for the scholarship before applying for a place.
