Swiss Government Scholarships for International Students

Swiss Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Students
The Swiss Government, through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), awards various postgraduate scholarships to foreign scholars and researchers:  University scholarships (Swiss universities, Federal Institutes of Technology as well as Universities of Applied Sciences) and Arts scholarships (schools of music and fine arts, only for a limited number of countries).  These scholarships provide graduates from all fields with the opportunity to pursue doctoral or postdoctoral research in Switzerland at one of the public funded university or recognized institution.

Swiss Universities that offer Scholarships for International Students

ETH Excellence Scholarships
The ETH Excellence Scholarships is the flagship scholarship of the Swiss Federal Institute of Tehcnology Zurich â€" Top 12 in World University Rankings 2012. International Bachelor’s students who have passed their first-year exams  and  international Master students, who acquired their Bachelor’s degree at another university, can apply for these scholarships when they have successfully completed the second semester of the Master programme. The scholarships can be awarded to students who belong to the best 10 percent of their Bachelor programme.  The scholarships covers the full study and living costs during the Master degree course.

University of Lausanne Master’s Grants for Foreign Students
The University of Lausanne in Switzerland offers scholarships to international students who wishes to pursue a Masters Degree at the University through the UNIL Master’s Grants.  The amount of the grant is CHF 1,600.- per month from 15 September to 15 July, for a duration not exceeding the regulation minimum period of the programme (according to the programme, one-and-a-half years or two years subject to deduction for paid placements or exempt semesters, if any).

University of Bern Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Students
The University of Bern Masters Grants are for international students who wish to do a Master’s programme at the university.  The scholarship is offered for Master’s Programmes offered at the University.  The grant consists of CHF1,600 per month for the duration of the Master’s programme.

EPFL Excellence Fellowships
Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) offers a limited number of fellowships at the Master level to students with outstanding academic records.  Anyone holding a Bachelor’s degree is eligible to apply to the EPFL Masters Programmes and by consequence to an EPFL fellowship.  Each fellowship consists of a financial package of CHF 16,000 per academic year (thus, a maximum of CHF 32’000 for a two-year Master) for external applicants.

Graduate Institute Scholarships
A significant number of scholarships are awarded each year to students attending Master and PhD programmes at the Graduate Institute Geneva.  All candidates to the Institute’s regular Master and PhD programmes are eligible to apply.  Full scholarships generally amount to CHF 18,000 per year and include an exemption of the Institute’s tuition fees. University of Geneva Excellence Master Fellowships

Arkansas University Scholarships

Colby-Sawyer College Scholarships

Columbia College Scholarships

Concordia College Scholarships
Concordia prizes the contributions international students make on campus and is pleased to provide partial financial assistance to international students. The International Student Scholarship is based on academic ability and family need, amounting up to $25,000 per year.

Cornell University Scholarships
Cornell has a limited amount of funding available for international undergraduates, only 30-40 scholarships are awarded to students in each entering clas s. The scholarships are either partial or full, based on the selected student’s need.

Dartmouth College Scholarships
Dartmouth College offers need-based financial aid to  all students, including international and transfer applicants . It does not award academic, athletic or merit scholarships. The College  is committed to meeting 100% of every student’s demonstrated need during their four years of undergraduate study.

East Tennessee State University
East Tennessee State University (ETSU) offers the International Students Academic Merit Scholarship for new internation al students seeking a graduate or undergraduate degree. The scholarship covers 50 percent of the total of in and out-of-state tuition and maintenance fees only. No additional fees or costs are covered. The scholarship award can only be used for study at ETSU.

East West Center Scholarships
East-West Center offers Graduate Degree Fellowship for Master’s and Doctoral studies for students from Asia, the Pacific, and the U.S. to participate in educational and research programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate study at the University of Hawai‘i.  

Emory College Scholarships
Emory University offers need-based financial aid awards to a select number of international undergraduate students. All citizens of foreign countries who are not permanent residents of the United States (living in the U.S. or abroad) will be reviewed for this new international scholarship.   As well, international applicants are encouraged to apply for merit-based scholarships through the Emory University Scholars Program (November 15 deadline).

Illino is Wesleyan University Scholarships
Merit-based scholarships are offered to qualified international applicants with outstanding academic achievement and test scores on the required entrance exams. These awards range from $10,000 to $25,000 per year and are renewable for up to four years.  In addition, two full-tuition President’s International Student Scholarships may be awarded each year to two highly qualified international students.

Iowa State University International Merit Scholarships
The International Merit Scholarship is awarded to well-rounded students who have demonstrated strong academic achievement, and outstanding talent or achievements in one or more of the following areas: math and sciences, the arts, extracurricular activities, community service, leadership, innovation, or entrepreneurship.  The awards range from $4,000 to $8,000 and are renewable.

Michigan State University International Scholarships
Michigan University provides a limited number of scholarship and grants to deserving international students at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.  These financial packages are not designed to support your full academic program at MSU.

New York University Wagner Scholarships
All international postgraduate student applicants at NYU Wagner are automatically considered for all merit-based s cholarships, as the University gives equal consideration to scholarship applicants from within the United States and abroad. The awards are partial to full tuition scholarships including the Robert F. Wagner Scholarship which includes a $20,000 annual stipend.

Oregon University Scholarships
At the University of Oregon you’ll find several sources of financial aid for international students, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Each year, the University of Oregon awards more than one million dollars in financial aid and scholarships to international students. One of their scholarship programs is the ICSP scholarship which awards 30â€"40 competitive scholarships to international students each year. Scholarships apply to tuition only and range from $7,000â€"$27,000 per year.

Wesleyan University Scholarships
Wesleyan University offers limited scholarships for international students and is awarded on the basis of both exceptional qualifications and demonstrated need. In addition to the 11 Asian students who are awarded yearly under the Freeman Asian Scholars Program, they provide financial assistance to approximately 15 international students from a pool of over 400 such applicants.

University of the West Scholarships

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The FIPRS pays the international student tuition fees charged by Flinders University for a research higher degree.  In addition, Flinders University provides the recipient with a generous living allowance paid at the rate of $25,395 per annum.

An FIPRS student who moves to Adelaide from overseas is eligible for an establishment allowance (after arrival at Flinders) of up to $1,485 to assist with relocation costs and airfares, provided receipts can be produced by the student.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be a citizen of any overseas country, except New Zealand, and, satisfy the University’s academic entry requirements for a Masters degree by research or Doctorate by research, including the English proficiency levels set by Flinders University for international students.

Students for whom English is a foreign language will need to provide evidence of their English language competence. Applicants must not hold an equivalent research higher degree qualification.  Applications are normally only open to students commencing a research higher degree in Australia for the first time.

Rotary Foundation Global Scholarship Grants (Any Country)
The Rotary Foundation Global Grants can be used to fund scholarships with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in one of Rotary’s six areas of focus related to development: peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, and economic & community development.  The study grants are valued at least $30,000. Generally, the study grants can be carried out in any country where there is a Rotary club or district.

OFID Scholarship Award (Any Country)
OFID (The OPEC Fund for International Development) offers fully-funded scholarships to successful applicants who wish to pursue a Master’s degree in a development-related discipline from an accredited University around the world (subject to approval).   The winner of the OFID Scholarship Award will receive a tuition support of up to US$50,000 plus a a monthly allowance to cover living expenses, books and accommodation.

Joint Japan World Bank Scholarship Program (Multiple Countries)
The Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students from World Bank member countries to pursue development-related studies at selected Universities around the world.  The scholarships cover the cost of completing a master’s degree or its equivalent including tuition, subsistence allowance, travel costs.

KAAD Scholarships for Developing Countries (Germany)
The KAAD scholarships are addressed to post-graduates and to academics who already gained professional experience and who are interested in postgraduate studies (or research stays) in Germany.  The scholarship are targeted to citizens of developing or emerging countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America.  There is no specific subject-preference but there is a certain leaning towards “development oriented” studies or studies that will be of significance for the home country of the applicant.

VLIR-UOS Scholarship Program (Belgium)
Every year, VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study one of the 15 International Course Programmes (ICPs) or one of the 6 International Training Programmes (ITPs) in development-related fields. The scholarships cover all related expenses including allowance, accommodation, travel costs, tuition fee, and insurance.

Hubert Humphrey Fellowships Program (USA)
The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides a year of professional enrichment in the United States for experienced professionals from designated countries throughout the world.   The Fellowship provides ten months of non-degree academic study and related professional experiences in the United States.  The eligible fields of study are mostly development related.

Commonwealth Scholarships (UK)
The Commonwealth Scholarships are targeted to students from developing Commonwealth countries who wants to pursue Master’s, PhD, and split-site (PhD) study in the UK. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).   All subject areas are eligible, although the CSC’s selection criteria give priority to those applications that demonstrate strong relevance to development.

Edinburgh Global Development Academy Scholarships (UK)
The University of Edinburgh offers Masters Scholarships for international students from least developing countries as for eligible Master’s programmes related to International development and Environment offered by the University.  The scholarships cover the overseas rate of tuition fee for students from less developed countries.

University of East Anglia Development Scholarships (UK)
The University of East Anglia is offering partial and full scholarships for students from developing/low-income countries. The scholarships are towards a Masters Degree in international development courses offered by the School of International Development.   Multiple International Development Scholarships worth £1,000 fees awards and One (1) International Development Full Fees Scholarship are offered to international taught applicants on the basis of academic excellence and their personal statement.

International Water Centre Scholarships for International Students (Australia)
The IWC Masters Scholarships are prestigious scholarships awarded annually to high calibre domestic and international candidates accepted into the Master of Integrated Water Management (MIWM) and who clearly demonstrate potential to become water leaders of the future.  The scholarships cover full tuition scholarships and overseas health cover.

United Nations University Scholarships in MS in Sustainability, Development and Peace (Japan)
The Japan Foundation for United Nations University (JFUNU) Scholarship is available for outstanding applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance and who are granted admissions to UNU-ISP under the MS in Sustainability, Development, and Peace program. The JFUNU scholarship covers the full tuition fees, and provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 JPY* for living expenses for a maximum of 24 months.

SEARCA Graduate Scholarships in Agriculture (Asia)
The SEARCA Graduate Scholarship Programme aims to ensure the relevance and responsiveness of Southeast Asia’s agricultural scientists and professionals to global sustainable development issues.  Eligible fields of study include agriculture and related sciences (including biological sciences, fishery, environmental science, statistics, forestry and social sciences). The scholarship covers stipend, tuition, international and domestic travel allowances, thesis/dissertation support, book allowance, and health insurance.

Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Program (Any country)
The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from selected countires (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, and Madagascar) who have no other means of financing their studies.  In France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, applications are accepted from those who are originally from one of the above developing countries, are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year.  The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only.  Generally, the scholar is allowed to choose a reputable University of his/her choice subject to approval.

Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarships (European Union)
The European Union (EU) offers full-time scholarships for a wide range of Masters programmes to students coming from developing/emerging countries outside the EU.  The programme offers full scholarships and/or fellowships that cover the living costs, tuition fees, travelling and insurance costs of the students.

Australia Awards Scholarships (Australia)
Australia Awards Scholarships, formerly known as Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), are scholarships for international students who wants to take up vocational education and training courses, undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees, and PhD degrees  in Australian Universities. Scholarship holders are required to return to their country of citizenship for two years after they have completed their studies to contribute to the development of their home country. The scholarship benefits generally include: full tuition fees, return air travel, establishment allowance, contribution to living expenses (CLE), Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC),  etc.

Netherlands Fellowship Program (Netherlands)
The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are scholarships that allow candidates from developing countries to receive a postgraduate education and to earn Dutch Master or PhD degree in a wide range of studies at Dutch Universities.  The fellowship can cover the costs of tuition fees, allowance, visas, travel costs, insurance and thesis research.  Fellowship holders are to return to their home country upon finishing the course or programme to help in the development of their home country.

Quota Scholarship Scheme (Norway)
The Norwegian government provides scholarships for students from developing countries in the South and countries of Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia under the Quota Scheme.  The scheme normally includes courses at the Master and Ph.D. level, in addition to certain professional degrees offered by state universities and colleges in Norway. Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. About 30 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 70 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion is waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study.

Developing Solutions Scholarships at University of Nottingham (UK)
The Developing Solutions Scholarships are designed for international students from Africa, India or one of the developing countries of the Commonwealth who want to study a Masters Degree at the University of Nottingham and make a difference to the development of their home country. Each year,  105 scholarships  are awardedâ€" 30 scholarships will cover the full tuition fee while 75 will cover 50% of the tuition fee.

University of West England Millennium Development Scholarships (UK)
The University of the West of England, Bristol offers the Millennium Development Scholarship which is targeted to international students who wish to attain Millennium Development goals within their country.  The recipient of this scholarship will be required to undertake an internship working within the International Development Office. The scholarship includes full tuition fees.

University of Bradford Scholarships for Developing Countries in Crisis (UK)
The University of Bradford Countries in Crisis Scholarships are intended to aid international students in financial hardship due to the fact that they are domiciled in a country that is in crisis as a result of the political situation, war, natural disaster etc. The scholarship is available for students on full time Master’s programmes (not MBA) based at the University of Bradford. Each scholarship is worth approximately £20,000 which includes full tuition fees and accommodation plus £2000 per annum living costs.

Leiden University Excellence Scholarships (Netherlands)
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is open to outstanding non-EU/EEA students pursuing any MA, MSc and LL.M programmes offered at Leiden University. (Note: a number of programmes have a start date in September only).  Depending on the student’s merit, the scholarship covers 25-100% of the tuition fees. The highest award covers the tuition fee minus the home fee* and an allowance of €10,000 for living costs.

University of Maastricht High Potential Scholarships (Netherlands)

Erik Bleumink Scholarships for Developing Countries at University of Groningen (Netherlands)

Uppsala University IPK Scholarships (Sweden)

Umea University Scholarships (Sweden)

Gates Cambridge Scholarships (UK)
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are full-cost awards for graduate study and research in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.  The scholarships are open to all international students from all over the world.  A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge namely: university fees, maintenance allowances, airfare, and some dependent’s allowance.

Clarendon Scholarships at University of Oxford (UK)
The Clarendon Fund is the University of Oxford’s flagship scholarship scheme. The awards are sponsored by Oxford University Press and are only available at the University of Oxford for all full-time and part-time graduate degrees.  This encompasses all full-time and part-time Master’s courses (MSt, MSc, BCL/MJur, MBA, MFE, MPhil, BPhil, MSc by Research, MTh, MPP) and all DPhil programmes. All Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and a generous grant for living expenses.

Melbourne International Research Scholarships (Australia)
The Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) is awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at the University of Melbourne. MIRSs are funded by the University with each faculty having a limited number to award.  Benefits provided by the MIRS include living allowance, relocation grant, thesis allowance and paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.

University of Sydney International Scholarships (Australia)
